While some specialized 3-flute drills can drill from solid, most 3-flute configurations are optimized as core drills (opening existing or cored holes). Because the web at the center is thicker and lacks a traditional center chisel edge, they excel at enlarging pre-existing holes with extreme accuracy.
A standard two-flute bit can flex and drill slightly lobed (triangular) holes. Three Flute Drill Bits provide 360-degree stability with three contact points on the hole wall. This eliminates chatter, produces true round holes, and allows for significantly higher feed rates.
Because there are three flutes dividing the circumference of the tool, each individual drill bit flute valley is smaller than on a two-flute drill. For this reason, 3-flute bits work best in short-chipping materials (like cast iron, brass, and aluminum alloys) or in applications with high-pressure coolant.
